The increasing rise of ecotourism, thanks to nature reserves like the Tambopata National Reserve, Manu National Park, and Bahuaja Sonene, has brought the city into the spotlight due to the high degree of biodiversity in its forests.
Every day, locals and tourists from different parts of the world (such as the United States, Europe, Asia, etc.), as well as scientists and students, visit the Tambopata Research Center or the National Reserve. Despite being historically abandoned, these areas have been revitalized to enhance tourism in the city and help it grow.
During your visit, you will enjoy various attractions, such as the Viewpoint at the center of town, where you can be amazed by the incredible views of the rainforests and rivers seamlessly blending with urban progress.
One of the highlights is the famous “Macaw Clay Lick” at the Tambopata River, where you can observe the majestic wildlife that inhabits the area.
Your day tours will take you to beautiful locations such as Lago Sandoval Tambopata, the Monkey Island, the native community “Infierno,” and the scenic beauty from the river ports.
The incredible landscapes surrounding this hidden gem, with thrilling rides on the Tambopata and Madre de Dios rivers, and the unreal oxbow lakes (formed when a wide meander of a river is cut off), will leave you in awe.
And let’s not forget the friendly and welcoming people of Puerto Maldonado, making it one of those places you’ll never want to leave.
This is a must-see for all nature lovers and hiking travelers. If you’ve come to visit the Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu, you can easily add this amazing tour to your day trips in Peru. We are confident you won’t regret it!
Your journey begins with a transfer from Puerto Maldonado airport to the river port on the Madre de Dios River. From here, we will board a motorboat and head down the river to our Amazon Lodge.
Once at the lodge, our team will help you settle into your room. After a quick rest, we’ll embark on a visit to the famous Monkey Island, where you’ll have the chance to observe various species of monkeys, amphibians, insects, and birds.
Next, we’ll visit the canopy tower, a thrilling experience offering spectacular views of the Amazon jungle from atop the trees. In the afternoon, we’ll return to the lodge for a delicious local dinner.
After dinner, we’ll take a night trip to spot alligators. Our guide will provide powerful lanterns to illuminate the creatures' glowing red eyes. We will then return to the lodge to spend the night.
Today begins early with a journey to the Tambopata Ecological Reserve. After breakfast, we’ll embark on a 3 km walk across the Madre de Dios River, where our guide will introduce you to the biodiversity of the region. Our destination: the stunning Sandoval Lake.
At the lake, you’ll witness a rich variety of wildlife, including birds, monkeys, and sloths. We’ll take a boat ride to get closer to these animals, and if we’re lucky, we might spot endangered giant otters or large black caimans.
After lunch in the reserve, you’ll have the opportunity to cool off with a swim in the refreshing lake waters. Then, we’ll return to the lodge for dinner and some well-deserved rest.
After breakfast, we’ll take a boat to Puerto Maldonado and then travel by 4x4 trucks for a two-hour drive to the banks of the Tambopata River. From there, we’ll journey by boat to the Tambopata Learning Lodge.
In the afternoon, we’ll take an introductory walk into the rainforest, where you can observe amphibians, mammals, reptiles, and various insects in their natural habitat. After the walk, we’ll return to the lodge for a hearty dinner before the day ends.
We’ll wake up early at 4:30 am for an exciting boat trip to the world’s largest macaw clay lick, El Chuncho. The journey takes about 1.5 hours, and along the way, you might spot capybaras, tapirs, and, if you’re lucky, the majestic Jaguar.
At the clay lick, hundreds of parrots and colorful macaws gather to feed on the clay, an essential process to neutralize toxins in their diet. This breathtaking sight is a highlight of the Amazon rainforest.
After returning to the lodge for lunch, we’ll take a hike along a trail to explore more of the region’s biodiversity, including wild rodents, birds, insects, and giant trees.
In the evening, you can step outside to admire the nocturnal creatures like moths, beetles, and praying mantis attracted to the lodge’s black light. For those with energy left, a short night walk into the forest will be available.
After breakfast, we’ll begin our return trip to Puerto Maldonado, offering one last chance to spot wildlife along the way.
In the afternoon, we will arrive in the city, where we will drop you off at the bus station for your onward journey.
Come prepared with a raincoat or poncho for rain, since in the rainforest it can rain at any time. It is also advisable to bring bathing clothes to bathe in the streams. For excursions in the trail system maintained by Tambopata Trek, rubber boots are available in a selection of sizes.
For walks in the forest, we recommend wearing light clothing, long and loose pants, long-sleeved shirts, and waterproof shoes or rubber boots, slippers. In the hostel, guests can wear shorts, short-sleeved shirts, and sandals. In the early jungle mornings, it can be cold, so it is advisable to wear a windbreaker or long-sleeved sweater.
None is mandatory in Peru, but they are recommended. Typically, when traveling, vaccines against typhoid, infectious hepatitis, and polio are recommended. Check with your doctor or local clinic before traveling.
Yes, of course, so that we can offer a good service and help you report any illness and/or allergy you have.
We have a luggage guard service, so you can walk in the jungle with greater comfort, carrying only what you will need during your stay. We will have enough time to move those essential items into your small backpack.
Seeing the macaws up close at the clay lick was truly magical, and the wildlife in the area didn’t disappoint—monkeys, exotic birds, and more. The boat rides and jungle walks were peaceful and full of natural beauty. The lodge was comfortable, and the food was great. The guide was very knowledgeable, but I would have liked a little more time for deeper exploration. Overall, a fantastic experience if you’re looking to get into the heart of the Amazon!
