At first, you may feel a little nervous about the night walk through the jungle. Taking careful steps in the dark, guided only by your flashlight, you will gradually open your eyes to a whole new world. As some animals sleep, others awaken to begin their nocturnal activities, filling the Amazon with life and mystery. Strange creatures of the night—giant insects, spiders, frogs, scorpions, and snakes—are ready to be observed in their natural habitat.
Our night walk in the jungle offers a unique opportunity to experience the wonders of the Amazon at night. In the deep darkness of the forest, surrounded by the sounds of hundreds of insects, and with the help of good lanterns and our expert guide, you will find yourself in the midst of incredible nocturnal creatures that remain hidden during the day.
This adventure will lead you to encounter fascinating species such as arboreal frogs, various types of insects, different species of spiders—including tarantulas—reptiles, nocturnal monkeys, armadillos, and moths that thrive in the dark.
Spending time in the jungle at night is a fascinating, incredible, and mysterious experience. You never know what kind of strange creature you will encounter during the walk. Experiencing the Amazon after sunset reveals an entirely different side of the rainforest, filled with secrets and some of the strangest life forms on Earth. If you have only seen the jungle during the day, you have only witnessed half of its wonder—this is why we invite you to explore it at night.
The first night at Rainforest Lodge (600 m.a.s.l.) the temperature is around 27°C. In the low forest of the Manu, the temperature at night is normally around 27°C, and during the day about 35°C. As always, cold winds from Patagonia could reach the Manu area, and the temperature could drop to around 10°C. These “Friajes” are very common in the southeast of the hemisphere, during the wind season (between April until the end of August).
There are not many walks in the sense of going far. All walks are done slowly. This is because most of the vegetation in the forest allows you to see the animals, giving enough time to observe the surroundings and also hear them.
We request that hikers bring their own water on the first day since the containers with water will be accessible at dinner time. For the rest of the trip, we will provide bottled and purified mineral water that we bring from Cusco.
The risk of contracting malaria is low in the area we visit. However, the area is close to a gold mining area, and miners can travel in the same river that we use. There is a possibility that mosquitoes, which do not yet have malaria, could bite an infected miner and then bite you, transmitting the disease. This possibility is very rare, and until now, no tourists traveling to Manu have contracted malaria.
