We will begin our journey early in the morning from Cusco. Our private transport will pick us up around 6:00 a.m. for the road trip to Manu National Park. The first stop will be Ninamarca, located about 90 kilometers away. Here, we will visit the Chullpas of Ninamarca, mysterious pre-Inca funerary towers surrounded by stunning Andean scenery.
Next, we will continue to Paucartambo, a picturesque colonial town known for its preserved traditions and vibrant culture. We will stroll through its charming streets and enjoy a warm breakfast before continuing the route. The road will climb to Acjanaco Pass at 3,850 meters, marking the official entrance to the park. Here, we will register and enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the cloud forest below.
From this point, we will descend through lush vegetation filled with bromeliads, orchids, and moss-covered trees. We will make short stops to observe colorful birds such as quetzals, oropendolas, and Peru’s national bird, the cock-of-the-rock. With luck, we might even spot the elusive spectacled bear. In San Pedro, we will enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by our chef. By the afternoon, we will arrive at our eco-lodge, surrounded by the peaceful sounds of nature.
We will wake up early to the sounds of birds and enjoy a nutritious breakfast. Then, we will walk to a nearby viewpoint to spot colorful bird species such as hummingbirds, macaws, and toucans. Afterward, we will drive to Atalaya Port, a natural dock on the upper Madre de Dios River.
Before boarding our traditional wooden boat, we will receive life jackets, rubber boots, and all necessary safety gear. We will then sail through the tranquil river surrounded by lush jungle landscapes. We will observe the dense forest canopy and spot wildlife along the riverbanks, including capybaras and monkeys. After a scenic boat ride, we will arrive at a new eco-lodge for lunch and rest.
In the afternoon, we will visit Machuwasi Lake, a paradise for wildlife observation. To reach it, we will walk along a jungle trail before paddling across the calm waters. As we canoe, we may encounter giant otters, camungos, and herons. The reflections of the trees and sky on the lake will create a magical scene. Later, we will climb a watchtower to admire the view and take photos of ancient trees. After dinner, we will take a night walk to spot caimans and nocturnal creatures that awaken under the jungle’s darkness.
We will start before sunrise to witness one of the most spectacular scenes in the Peruvian Amazon. After a 40-minute boat ride, we will reach the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick. There, we will watch flocks of parrots, parakeets, and macaws feeding on mineral-rich clay. Their vibrant colors and calls will create a once-in-a-lifetime show.
After breakfast back at the lodge, we will explore jungle trails to discover the giant ceiba tree, towering more than 60 meters. Our guide will teach us about medicinal plants and the deep connection between the locals and the forest. We will hear stories about traditional healing and observe wildlife hidden in the thick vegetation.
In the afternoon, we will enjoy piranha fishing in a peaceful lagoon. We will learn traditional techniques while admiring one of the most beautiful sunsets in the jungle. After dinner, those with energy may join another night walk to see frogs, insects, and glowing eyes of creatures moving in the dark.
We will wake up surrounded by the peaceful sounds of the jungle. After breakfast, we will pack our bags and say goodbye to the Amazon. We will take our final boat ride along the Madre de Dios River, enjoying the sunrise and the beauty of the Amazon basin. Every moment will remind us of the incredible biodiversity we have witnessed.
Once we reach Atalaya Port, our private transport will take us back to Cusco. Along the way, we will stop at Acjanaco Pass for a delicious lunch and final photos of the forest. The drive will reveal how the jungle fades into the Andes as we return to the highlands. We will arrive in Cusco around 6:00 p.m., ending an unforgettable experience filled with adventure, discovery, and connection with nature.
