DETAILED PROGRAM

Day 1. Puerto Maldonado – Tambopata

Welcome to our traveler at the airport or bus station and transfer to our local office for your corresponding registration. Then, we will transfer to our pier where we will board our boat to go to the hotel (a 40-minute journey). As a welcome to the hotel, you will be served a refreshing juice made with local fruits. In the evening, we will take our boat to search for nocturnal animals that are always along the banks of the Madre de Dios River. We have the opportunity to see different-sized caimans, owls, nightjars, and with luck, the world’s largest rodent, capybaras. We will return for dinner time.

Day 2: Visit to Sandoval Lake

One of the best times to observe abundant wildlife is at dawn or dusk. In our case, we choose to set out at dawn in our boat towards Lake Sandoval, located within the Tambopata National Reserve. Witnessing the lush biodiversity of Lake Sandoval is simply incomparable. To reach Lake Sandoval, we walk along a wooden trail of nearly 3 km (1.8 miles). Throughout the walk, we are constantly amazed by the rich fauna of this place. At the end of the trail, we reach a small dock where we take a rowboat for our journey on Lake Sandoval. During this ride, we can see black caimans, giant otters, herons, turtles, monkeys, macaws, wild ducks, and much more. We return to the lodge before noon for lunch.

In the afternoon, we visit a family of natives belonging to the “Matsigenka” culture, where we interact with them and learn about their culture. We will learn how to use bows and arrows, spin and weave cotton to make their clothing called “Cushma.” They will also teach us how to make ropes using plant bark and demonstrate their ingenuity in making fire using only nature’s resources. We return to our boat and head back to the city at sunset.

As night falls, the jungle begins to offer us a majestic nocturnal life, very different from the usual daytime activities. For this tour, we need to venture into the trails with our flashlights in search of nocturnal wildlife such as porcupines, sloths, arachnids, insects, reptiles, opossums, night monkeys, owls, among others. We return to the lodge for dinner and then rest.

Day 3: Optional Tour – Transfer to Puerto Maldonado

After a restful night and a hearty breakfast, we head out to visit a local farm where we will learn about plant grafting and different types of soils. Additionally, we will have the opportunity to taste and see typical plantations of the tropical rainforest, such as coffee, various types of cocoa, citrus fruits, ingas, bananas, among others. We return to the lodge around noon.

We offer the option to relax at the lodge, and in the evening, we return to the city to pick up any luggage you may have left at our office. Then, we proceed to the airport, or if you have a bus journey, we head to the bus terminal.
